Can I just point out a few interesting things about this letter sent home with my kindergartener?
.
The first one being the huge underlined Mandatory at the top. Since when is anything about kindergarten mandatory, let alone this meeting? Because he's not going to learn how to read if I don't show? Puh-lease, have you heard him reading?
.
The second being the fact that even though the information they will be sharing is important enough to make my attendance at the meeting mandatory, if for some reason I cannot make it, they will not be giving me the packet of information they are so generously putting together.
.The third being the stains on the paper that witness how long I've had it laying on the counter to stew over every time I walked into the kitchen. I guess it comes down to the fact that I really don't like people telling me what to do, let alone when to do it.
.The fourth being no children allowed. There better be day care. Because this one night is the only night all month that I have plans. And lots of them. Visiting teaching. Fred's meetings. Enrichment. Scouts. Maybe I'll actually cook dinner (it could happen). And did I mention that my babysitter (Grandma) also happens to have plans every Tuesday night and therefore is not eligible to watch the kiddos?
.
I'm not sure I'm going to make it. I think that's my night to wash my hair and read to the boys before bed.
.
.
That's all I wanted to say. The rant is over.

i just like how you blocked out all of your location information with adorable red apples.
We ranted over it also. Like, this is our 5th child--if we don't know how to help them read by now, we're already a lost cause! Mandatory? Are they not going to let our daughter back in Kindergarten if we don't show? And yeah, I'm going to enrichment too so I just won't be able to make it. And the last thing I need lying around is another pile of papers that I will feel guilty about throwing away.
No need to go. Kinder isn't even required. You don't have to send your kids to school until 1st grade. Kinder is the gov'ts way of getting your kids under their control faster. Pretty soon, Pre-k will be "mandatory". HA! As long as you are a parent that cares, you don't need any "mandatory" meeting. Meetings like this are for parents that have no clue how to be parents.
I got a similar letter from my son's kindergarten class, talking about teaching our children how to read better. No kids allowed. It's pretty ridiculous, if you ask me.
Although I understand your frustration at the word "mandatory" (I have 5 myself), you should count yourself grateful you have a school that knows about terms like "phonemic awareness". I have spent 18 months trying to help my school understand why my son (and many like him) can't read. I wish I lived in your district. It sounds like the kids who really need help, will get it.
Trust me the K teachers were just as bent as the parents at being forced to hold this meeting. Blame it all on the district. :D
